Akarnanika

Rock, Sport

The Acarnanian mountains as seen from the island of Lefkada. In between are the lush green islands of Madouri, Skorpios, Meganisi, representative of the beauty of the Ionian Sea.

The Acarnanian Mountains (1588m) or “Akarnanika Ori”, are an imposing limestone range in the Aitoloacarnania prefecture of Western Greece, their highest summit is “Psili Korfi ”, the largest settlement is Monastiraki, while to the east it is bounded by the Acheloos. The main massif is located south of Vonitsa, west of Agrinio and north of Lake Ozeros. Due both to the steep terrain and location, the mountain is characteristically eroded and is popular for hiking with excellent views of both the Ambracic Gulf and Lefkada Island.

The mountains are made of four massifs, those of Psili Korfi (1588m), Boumistos (1577m), Agrapidaki (1392m) and Tserekas (1,171m), while there are also two large valleys, of Kompoti and Archontochori. Settlement is spare and centered on the plain of Alyzia on the south side of the mountain. The Acarnanian Mountains are especially important for the survival of the griffon vulture with 50% of the Greek population wintering on its slopes.

The plain of Alysia and Mytikas were a provincial center in ancient times, peaking during the Hellenistic period with over 30000 residents as well as an important port. Other important ancient towns on the foothills of the mountain were Heraclea, Toryveia and Thyrion.

Access

The Acarnanian Mountains are west of Ionia Odos and south of Vonitsa and as such they are accessible from three directions. From Vonitsa we follow the southbound road for Palairos passing through Monastiraki and Palairos, continuing onwards for Mytikas. From Amfilochia access is possible from the east by the valley of Archontochori via the villages of Katouna and Aetos. Finally, from the south, for approaches via Agrinio or Mesologgi, exit Ionia Odos at Stamna and continue towards Astakos and then following the coastal road for Mytikas. The nearest airport is Preveza International Airport which is 46Km and less than 1hr of driving from Mytikas.

Climbing history

The Acarnanian Mountains are a characteristic example of a medium elevation limestone massif in Western Greece, with poor quality rock at higher elevations but impressive headwalls much lower. The eroded and steep terrain, as well as the lack of significant snow-cover, limit the possibilities for winter climbing routes, while the installation of a wind-park at Psili Korfi has ruined the once popular hiking route. Today, in the Acarnanian Mountains, other than hiking, visitors can engage in sport climbing at the Kamplafka Crag, near Mytikas.

The Kamplafka Crag, west of Mytikas is a sea-side limestone cliff with a southeast aspect, making it possible to climb year-round. With difficulties from 4c to 7c the routes are appropriate for both beginner and advanced sport climbers.
