Ymittos - Vrachokipos

Rock, Sport

Vrachokipos is located on the south side of Mt Ymittos in the Koropi area and in close proximity to three other crags, Sesi, Lelaki and Profitis Ilias. The discovery of the crag and the initial route setting is attributed to N. Xanthopoulos and E. Karabela. Since then many climbers have climbed and opened new routes.

Vrachokipos is the result of a spectacular geological process (visible in full scale from nearby Lelaki) which created the extended rock zone ending in the characteristic “rock wave”, the trademark of the crag. The rock is limestone of excellent quality and aesthetics adorned with tufas and pockets. Climbing is mainly on overhangs and vertical sections. Due to the morphology of the rock, most routes are of high difficulty. All routes are fully bolted.

The crag is west facing and in the sun after midday. Sunny winter days are ideal to visit the place. During summertime it is possible to climb only early in the morning when the rock is in the shade.

The area of Ymittos is home to many species of birds and predators. Climbers are requested to pay attention during the reproduction period (March to May) when birds might be using the holes or ledges in the routes to nest and breed their young.

For the approach, driving on Lavriou Avenue towards Koropi, pass the local Health Center (left hand side of the road) and turn right, right after confectionary (notice green sign in Greek pointing towards Kekropia theater). Turn right again at the end of the road and continue towards the mountains on Fleming Road (it changes name to “Dimosthenous Road” after a few kilometers). Soon you shall be able to see the extensive rock cliff of Profitis Ilias. Upon reaching the big opening (about 5,5Km from Koropi) leave the main road by turning right to enter dirt road for 2Km till you reach the “hunting kiosk”. Turning right on the kiosk and left after 50m on the water well. After another 100m turn right again and follow the (bad) dirt road for 1,3Km. Park near a cluster of trees and follow red signs and occasional stone piles to the crag (20min walk).
