Avantas - Spilia

Rock, Sport

Chr. Karanikas bolting a route.

The crag of Spilia (Cave) is located by itself in the northern part of the valley of Avantas, northeast of Pyrgos, and offers difficult sport routes on steep terrain. With a southern aspect and positioned within ravine, it is attractive for the cold or rainy days of winter. Τhe limestone crag is equipped with routes graded between 6a+ to 7c and with heights between 12m to 16m. All routes except #5 and #6 are equipped with double open-type anchors.

Access

Approaching the area via EO35 from Alexandroupolis, the Spilia crag is not visible and thus, access from the chapel of Agios Athanasios is preferred. After parking across the chapel, 1Km from the village of Avantas, we follow for 250m the dirt road which passes under the pillar of Pyrgos. Having reached the base of the ravine, we turn right and continue on a narrow ascending path for 550m to access the crag. The duration of the approach from the chapel does not exceed 20min.

Climbing history

The crag was bolted by A. Exakoidis and Chr. Karanikas, during the spring and summer of 2020, and was supported by a European program for the development of outdoor activities.
